  5. The explosion of low-cost, 32-bit CPUs capable of running uClinux is providing even more options to manufacturers considering uClinux.

Embedded

  1. There are only very few applications that do not work on uClinux, with most of those being irrelevant for embedded applications.
  2. Even more so in deeply embedded environments where uClinux is likely to be found.
  3. At the low end is where uClinux really shines, making it ideal for small, 32-bit embedded applications.

Emulator

  1. The best way to get started is to look at the uClinux Emulators (Figure 2) and cheap hardware (Figure 3) options available.
  2. The emulators mentioned here serve to give the user a strong understanding of uClinux and its application.

Port

  1. As a result, there is no code or data size limit in this uClinux port.
  2. A uCLinux kernel port to the Palm; not the first such port, but one of the only noted commercial attempts.
  3. When you boot you should see the uClinux logo and kernel messages going across the serial port into your terminal program.

Uclinux-Dist

  1. From the base directory of the uClinux-dist source tree do the following.
  2. SWARM (Software ARM) Basic support for this emulator is included in the uClinux-dist.

Gdb

  1. The gdb based simulator is the easiest to use and is also supported in the uClinux-dist sources.
  2. This page contains all the information needed to build gdb for use with the ARMulator and uClinux.

Processors

  1. SnapGear are the "champions" of uClinux, particularly on Motorola ColdFire processors.
  2. This code may be adapted to support non-MMU versions of these processors in uClinux.
  3. Most uClinux projects can port easily to Linux if memory or processor requirements grow.

Allocated

  1. Transient programs under uClinux also can affect where and how memory is allocated.
  2. Under uClinux, no such luxury is available as the stack must be allocated at compile time.

Devices

  1. The BF533 STAMP runs uClinux - a Linux port for embedded devices.
  2. This is not a limitation of the Blackfin architecture, but simply demonstrates that uClinux is designed to support devices without an MMU.
  3. Description: The primary goal of this project is to ensure the stability of the GNU Toolchain, and uClinux on the Blackfin processor from Analog Devices.

Porting

  1. Some notes about porting programs to uClinux.
  2. Currently the project is focused on porting the uClinux kernel to the iPod.
  3. It's not all directly related to porting uClinux and mbvanilla, but it will help you understand how the pieces fit together.

Vm

  1. It is the direct effect of no VM that is the thorn in every uClinux developer's side.
  2. Because of the lack of VM in the uClinux environment, it is nearly impossible to utilize memory fully due to fragmentation.

Sources

  1. The userland is based off of the sources available in the “user” subdirectory of the uclinux-dist package.
  2. Reasonable support included in the uClinux-dist sources.

Allocate

  1. By default, the uClinux toolchains allocate 4KB for the stack, which is close to nothing for modern applications.
  2. Memory allocation on uClinux can be very fast, but on the other hand a process can allocate all available memory.

Kernels

  1. A copy of the m68k-elf-tools will be required to build uClinux kernels and binaries for Xcopilot.
  2. To combat this problem, an alternative memory allocator has been created for the uClinux kernels.

Run

  1. There are quite a few other emulators that can run uClinux to varying degrees.
  2. One of the biggst shortfalls of the emulators available to run uClinux is the absence of real network device emulation.
